Standardized Entrance Exams

Health profession programs typically require standardized entrance exams for admission. Some common entrance exams are as follows:

  • Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
  • Dental Admission Test (DAT)
  • Physician Assistant College Admission Test (PA-CAT)
  • Optometry Admission Test (OAT)
  • Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)

Please note, for pharmacy admissions, this cycle is the last time the PCAT is being utilized.  PCAT will no longer be offered beginning 2024-2025 admissions cycle and beyond.  Some schools may utilize the GRE or MCAT, or be test-optional.  Please check directly with program of interest for up to date information on requirements.

Preparation for these examinations varies by individual. Note that your Cornell undergraduate courses are preparing you well for these exams, but additional preparation will be necessary. Many individuals self-study for entrance examinations using free or low-cost material, while others purchase a preparatory course from a third-party company. The HPAC does not endorse any specific prep companies, but rather encourages you to pursue options that suit your needs.

The HPAC Pre-Health Guide provides in depth information on preparation, exam logistics, fees, and deadlines in the “Application Readiness” module.
